Day 570-572 - Tungurahua
Baños was everything we imagined it to be, busy with backpackers, restaurants and bars catering to tourists and streets lined with souvenir shops and tour operators. Enough reasons not to come here. But there was one thing that drew us here despite all that. The Tungurahua volcano. It’s a really high and very active volcano and one of the few opportunities in the area to see red hot glowing lava spill down it’s flanks. With a bit of luck.
When riding towards Baños I was already very impressed with the Tungurahua. I wanted to stop and take a picture because most of it was visible for the time being. But Daniel wanted to arrive at our destination as quickly as possible and consoled me by saying I will be able to take pictures of it for the next couple of days. I should have stopped right there and then. First of all the volcano is not visible from the town and second it started raining that same evening and for the next days there was a thick cover of rain clouds at all times. Lesson learnt!
There’s not much else to be said about Baños. We had some nice food, met up with the Kradwanderer Uli and Stephan (who had also come here to see the Tungurahua spew lava) for two nights, wich was nice. And I also went to the sauna, which I love and haven’t done in a very long time. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations.

Tag 570-572 - Tungurahua
Baños war genau so wie wir es erwartet hatten, voller Backpacker, touristischen Bars und Restaurants und Straßen gesäumt von Souvenirshops und Tour-Anbietern. Genug Gründe um nicht hierher zu kommen. Aber es gab etwas, was uns trotzdem angelockt hat. Und zwar der Tungurahua Vulkan. Er ist ziemlich hoch, ziemlich aktiv und einer der wenigen Vulkane in der Gegend bei denen man mit etwas Glück rote glühende Lava die Flanken hinab fließen sehen kann.
Als wir in die Nähe von Baños kamen hat mich der Tungurahua schon sehr beeindruckt. Ich wollte gleich anhalten und Fotos machen, da der Großteil des Vulkans gerade aus den Wolken herausschaute. Aber Daniel wollte lieber erstmal ankommen und vertröstete mich damit, dass wir in den nächsten Tagen noch genug vom Tungurahua sehen würden. Ich hätte einfach anhalten sollen um meine Fotos zu machen. Denn zum Einen sieht man den Vulkan von Baños aus überhaupt nicht und zum Anderen begann es noch am selben Abend zu regnen und der gesamte Himmel war in den nächsten Tagen von einer dicken Wolkenschicht verhangen. Lektion gelernt!
Vielmehr gibts von Baños nicht zu berichten. Wir haben zwei Abende bei leckerem Essen mit den Kramwanderern Uli und Stephan verbracht (die auch wegen des Tungurahua und seiner Lava hergekommen waren) das war sehr nett. Und außerdem war ich seit Ewigkeiten mal wieder in der Sauna, die allerdings nicht ganz meinen Erwartungen gerecht werden konnte.
