Day 126 - Top Of The World Highway
Seems like fall is really coming. The leafs on the trees are starting to change colors and we’ve had some rain everyday for over a week now. Just before we got to Chicken, a cute little town (pop 15-30) in the middle of nowhere, it started pouring down. Chicken is the beginning of the 127 km long “Top of the world” highway between Alaska and Yukon. It offers spectacular views and today’s special was: Mud – “all you can ride”.
But I have to say, the Dalton Highway was a good teacher and I mastered todays challenge with no problems. The Fortymile River Region is still popular with gold mining and lots of people come here with pans and heavier equipment. We were told that some of them actually make a living from that. Very tempting, but in the rain we didn’t really feel like trying our luck.
Charming Dawson City, a former gold rush town, is at the end of the “Top of the world” highway.

Sieht so aus, als ob der Herbst tatsächlich schon kommt. Die Blätter an den Bäumen werden langsam bunt und wir hatten seit über einer Woche jeden Tag ein bisschen Regen. Kurz bevor wir in Chicken, ein kleines Örtchen (15-30 EW) am Ende der Welt, ankamen begann es wie aus Eimern zu schütten. In Chicken geht der 127 km lange “Top of the world” Highway zwischen Alaska und Yukon los. Er hat ein wahnsinniges Panaroma zu bieten und heute außerdem im Angebot: Matsch – “all you can ride”.
Aber der Dalton Highway war mir eine gute Schule und ich hab die Herausforderung heute ohne Probleme und ohne Stürze gemeistert.
Die Fortymile River Region ist immer noch bei Goldschürfern sehr beliebt und viele kommen mit ihren Schürfpfannen und auch schererem Geschütz. Man hat uns gesagt, daß manche Leute sogar ganz gut davon leben können. Sehr verlockend, aber bei dem Regen haben wir dann doch keine Lust unser Glück zu versuchen.
Am Ende des “Top of the world” Highways ist das hübsche ehemalige Goldgräberstädtchen Dawson City.
