Day 47 - Grand Canyon
The western states definitely have a lot of natural beauty to offer and the Grand Canyon is one of the major highlights. Lots of tourist come from all over the world to visit and right now it’s peak season. We had to make the decision wether to visit the very popular south rim, with all those famous views and lots of viewpoints to chose from or go to the north rim where it’s less crowded but also with less lookouts and photography opportunities. We opted for the north rim and did not regret it.
We got there fairly early in the day (by our standards) and even though the campsite was booked out days in advance we got lucky and got a spot. We set up our tent and immediately started riding around on our bikes. I’ve been to the south rim twice many years ago and I have to say that both sides are equally spectacular. The beauty and the magic of the place are just overwhelming. One feels so small all of a sudden.
We checked out all the viewpoints and at many of them we were the only ones there. Even at the spot for the best sunsets there were only a handful of people. We chose a nice spot to watch the sun go down and just sat there for hours enjoying the stunning views. I cooked us a yummy dinner in the nicest outdoor kitchen so far.
Though there is a shadow over this wonderful experience. Our camera broke and we’re now relying on two iPhones. Utterly devastating when your in a place like this. And also in regard to part 2 of “Somewhere Else Tomorrow”. Hoping to come up with a solution soon…

Tag 47 - Grand Canyon
Der Westen der USA hat einiges an Naturschönheiten zu bieten und der Grand Canyon ist sicher eins der größten Highlights. Millionen Touristen kommen von überall auf der Welt und jetzt gerade ist wieder Hochsaison. Wir mußten uns entscheiden, ob wir den beliebteren Südrand mit den berühmten Aussichten und den vielen Aussichtspunkten oder den weniger frequentierten Nordrand, der aber auch weniger Aussichtspunkte und Fotogelegenheiten hat, besuchen wollten. Wir haben uns für den Nordrand entschieden und es nicht bereut.
Für unsere Verhältnisse sind wir ziemlich früh dort angekommen und trotzdem der Campingplatz für Tage im Voraus ausgebucht war hatten wir Glück und einen Platz bekommen. Wir haben unser Zelt ausfgebaut und sind dann mit den Motorrädern rumgefahren. Ich war schon zwei Mal vor vielen Jahren am Südrand des Canyons und ich muß sagen, daß beide Seiten gleich spektakulär sind. Die Schönheit und die Magie dieses Ortes sind einfach überwältigend. Man fühlt sich auf einmal so klein.
Wir haben alle Aussichtpunkte ausgecheckt und bei den meisten waren wir die Einzigen dort. Selbst an dem Punkt, von wo aus man die besten Sonnenuntergänge sehen kann waren nur eine handvoll Leute. Wir haben uns dort ein schönes Plätzchen gesucht und ich hab uns in meiner bisher schönsten “Outdoor-Küche” ein leckeres Abendessen gekocht. Dann haben wir stundenlang einfach dagesessen und den atemberaubend Ausblick genossen bis es dunkel war.
Leider gab es einen Schatten über diesem wunderbaren Erlebnis. Unsere Kamera ist kaputt gegangen und jetzt müssen wir uns auf unsere IPhones verlassen. Absolut katastrophal wenn man an so einem Ort ist. Und auch im Hinblick auf Teil 2 von “Somewhere Else Tomorrow”. Da müssen wir uns jetzt mal was einfallen lassen…
