Day 427-429 - Tom’s German Bakery
Tom is a baker by trade and emigrated to Costa Rica about 18 years ago. Since then he delights Ticos and tourists alike with his excellent pastries and delicious german dishes. We first heard about hin through another german motorcycle couple months ago. But we knew right away that we would pay him a visit once we’re in the country. After such a long time on the road, one really misses the culinary highlights of home.
Tom is a really cool guy and isn’t a stranger to the travel community. He is a motorcycle enthusiast himself and his bakery has become a popular stopover for bikers on their way north or south. During our first conversation we already found out that we have several mutual friends and acquaintances.
It’s nice and cool in the mountains around lake Arenal and these days also pretty wet. To be accurate, it rained the entire three days we were there and only stopped for short periods of time. So with our german food we also got some german weather. But that didn’t bother us because „Tom’s Pan“ is a really nice and cosy place where you can easly hang out all day long. Aside from that we met Maik and Vicky in Nuevo Arenal who are currently backpacking through Central America. Maik is an old friend of mine from Berlin that I haven’t seen for at least 7 years. So we had a lot of catching up to do. Fun times snd time flew by. Now it’s time to get ourselves back into some drier and warmer climes again.

Tag 427-429 - Tom’s deutsche Bäckerei
Tom ist gelernter Bäcker und vor etwa 18 Jahren nach Costa Rica ausgewandert. Seit dem beglückt er Ticos und Touristen gleichermaßen mit exzellenten Backwaren und deliziösen deutschen Speisen. Zum ersten Mal haben wir von einem anderen Motorradreise-Pärchen von ihm gehört. Das war vor Monaten, aber schon dann stand fest, dass wir vorbei schauen wenn wir in Costa Rica sind. Nach so langer Zeit unterwegs vermisst man doch die heimische Kost.
Tom ist ein total netter Typ und auch kein Unbekannter in der Reiseszene. Er ist selbst Motorradenthusiast und Anlaufpunkt für viele Überlandreisende auf dem Weg Richtung Norden oder Süden. Schon im ersten Gespräch zeigte sich, dass wir einige gemeinsame Bekannte und Freunde haben.
In den Bergen um den Arenalsee ist es angenehm kühl und derzeit auch ziemlich feucht. Genau genommen hat es drei Tage lang durchgeregnet mit sehr kurzen Pausen zwischendurch. Also gab’s zum deutschen Essen auch noch deutsches Wetter. Das war aber gar nicht so schlimm, denn bei „Tom’s Pan“ ist es super gemütlich und man kann ohne Probleme den ganzen Tag dort verbringen. Ausserdem haben wir nämlich in Nuevo Arena Maik und Vicky getroffen, die als Backpacker gerade in Zentralamerika unterwegs sind. Maik ist ein alter Freund von mir aus Berlin, den ich seit bestimmt sieben Jahren nicht gesehen habe und da gab’s natürlich genug zum Quatschen. Lustig war’s und die Zeit verging wie im Flug. Und nun geht’s wieder mal in trockenere und wärmere Gefilde.
