Day 544-560 and 566-568 - In the highest capital of the world
So we’ve come to Quito a total of three times and spent almost three weeks. First time for my birthday the beginning of October, then after coming back from the Amazon and now Daniel and I have come back without Ulli and Stephan after our joint trip to a Tsáchila Community (that was my birthday present from Ulli and Stephan, more about it in the entry after the next one).
And it’s easy to stick around a bit longer at the Hostal Zentrum with Gerd and Frank. Two genuinely unique characters with lots of interesting stories to tell. To find a camping option in a big city is very unusual, but at this hostal a space specifically for bikers and campervans has been created next to the big house, even with a proper bathroom and a porch. And there was enough space to work on the bikes as well. The cozy german style beer pub made for a nice change to our chilly outdoor-office. At 2.800 meters altitude it does get pretty cool in the evenings.
Quito is a pretty modern city, with shopping malls, glass-front high-rise buildings in the city center and people in suits and stands in a stark contrast to Ecuador’s rural areas. In the line of all the big cities we’ve visited already during this trip it doesn’t stand out, but it’s still nice enough and pretty to look at especially from an elevated viewpoint.

Tag 544-560 und 566-568 - In der höchsten Hauptstadt der Welt
Insgesamt waren wir nun drei Mal in Quito für fast drei Wochen. Zu erst über meinen Geburtstag Anfang Oktober, dann nach der Amazonas-Tour und zuletzt sind Daniel und ich nochmal alleine ohne Ulli und Stephan nach einem gemeinsamen Besuch einer Tsáchila Community (das war mein Geburtstagsgeschenk von Ulli und Stephan, mehr dazu im übernächsten Eintrag) hergekommen.
Bei Gerd und Frank im Hostal Zentrum läßt’s sich aber auch aushalten. Zwei einmalige Charaktere mit interessanten Geschichten aus vielen zurückliegenden Jahren. Camping in der Großstadt ist ja eher selten zu finden, aber hier wurde neben dem großen Haus ein Stellplatz extra für Zelte und Wohnmobile eingerichtet, mit eigenem Bad und allem drum und dran. Und genug Platz um an den Bikes zu schrauben gab’s auch. Der gemütlicher Bierkeller war eine angenehme Abwechslung zum kühlen Outdoor-Office. Denn auf 2.800 Metern wird’s abends ziemlich kühl.
Quito ist eine ziemlich moderne Stadt mit Shopping Malls, verglasten Hochhäusern in der Innenstadt und Menschen in Anzügen und bildet einen starken Kontrast zu den ländlichen Gegenden Ecuadors. In der Reihe der vielen Großstädte die wir auf unserer Reise schon besucht haben nichts Besonderes, aber soweit ganz nett und von oben recht hübsch anzusehen.
