Day 185 - hopeless optimists
We had also heard lots of great stuff about Vancouver Island and din’t want to miss it under any circumstances. The weather forecast had announced continuous rain, the ‘west coast’ of the island is colloquially called ‘wetcoast’ and on the ferry we were greeted with the words: “Welcome to the liquid sunshine“. All pretty clear indicators for suboptimal motorcycle and camping conditions. But both, Daniel and I are innately optimistic and thought it couldn’t be that bad. Oh how wrong we were. Rain every day, temperatures definitely not suitable for a beach day and even flooded roads were awaiting us. I actually find it somehow cozy and enjoyable riding in the rain behind my little window. And especially so in a stunningly beautiful environment like this. But when the rain pants and shoes are starting to get soaked, it’s over with any such romance. Luckily in Nanaimo and Victoria some lovely people took us into their homes, so we only had to camp in Tofino. There we had to struggle with wetness at all levels, but were compensated with fantastic views of the ocean.

Tag 185 - Hoffnungslose Optimisten
Auch über Vancouver Island hatten wir so viele tolle Sachen gehört und wollten das auf jeden Fall nicht verpassen. Der Wetterbericht hatte Dauerregen angesagt, die ’westcoast’ der Insel wird im Umgangssprachlichen oft ‘wetcoast’ genannt und auf der Fähre wurden wir begrüßt mit den Worten: „Willkommen im flüssigen Sonnenschein!“ Alles recht eindeutige Indizien für suboptimales Motorrad- und Campingwetter, aber sowohl Daniel als auch ich sind von Haus aus Optimisten und dachten uns, so schlimm wird’s schon nicht werden. Aber weit gefehlt. Jeden Tag Regen, Temperaturen die definitiv nicht strandtauglich waren und sogar überschwemmte Straßen haben uns erwartet. Eigentlich find ich es auch irgendwie gemütlich hinter meiner kleinen Fensterscheibe im Regen zu fahren, vor Allem durch so wunderbare Natur. Aber spätestens wenn Regenhose und -schuhe durchnässt sind ist es vorbei mit der Romantik. Zum Glück wurden wir in Nanaimo und Victoria wieder von lieben Leuten in ihren Häusern aufgenommen und mussten so nur in Tofino zelten. Dort hatten wir zwar mit Nässe auf allen Ebenen zu kämpfen, aber dafür einen Hammerausblick aufs Meer.
