Day 525-526 - The coffee-triangle
From the cold we’re now back to some more pleasant climate in Manizales. This is where the coffee-triangle, that is formed by the departamentos Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío, officially begins and where the famous Colombian highland coffee is produced on hundreds of privately owned „Fincas“.
We’ve been invited by Luis to stay with him in his wonderful house on a mountain just outside of Manizales that offers some spectacular views over the valley. Our friends Paul and Bea whom we’ve visited twice in Portland, Oregon during this trip befriended Luis during the time they lived in New Zealand, where we visited them back in 2011. Luis has now also returned to his home country to work on some projects. One of them is the young magazine Alternativa of which he is a co-founder. We’re very proud that our story will be featured in the next edition of Alternativa.
All around Luis’ piece of land there are endless coffee plantations so we’re in a good spot to actually have a closer look at the coffee production of Colombia’s coffee region.

Tag 525-526 - Das Kaffee-Dreieck
Aus der Kälte geht’s nun wieder in angenehmeres Klima nach Manizales. Hier beginnt offiziell das kolumbianische Kaffee-Dreieck das sich über die Departamentos Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío erstreckt. Hier wird der Hauptteil des berühmten kolumbianischen Hochlandkaffees auf hunderten privaten Fincas produziert.
Wir sind zu Gast bei Luis in seinem wunderbaren Haus auf einen Berg und mit einer Aussicht die kaum zu überbieten ist. Unsere Freunde Paul und Bea die wir auf dieser Reise schon zwei Mal in Portland, Oregon besucht hatten, haben bis vor ein paar Jahren in Neuseeland gelebt wo wir sie 2011 besuchten. Dort haben sie Luis kennengelernt, der nun auch wieder in seine Heimat Kolumbien zurück gekehrt ist und dort an verschiedenen Projekten arbeitet. Er ist unter anderem Mitbegründer des jungen Magazins Alternativa in deren nächsten Ausgabe auch ein Artikel über uns und unsere Reise erscheinen wird.
Rings um Luis’ Stück Land herum befinden sich endlose Kaffeefelder. Und da bietet es sich ja an mal in die Kaffeeproduktion ein bisschen hinein zu schnuppern.
