Day 45 - Monumet Valley
Everyone knows the red rocks of Monument Valley, be it through countless movies or the Malboro commercial. They look like they’ve just dropped down from the sky. But the geographer knows that they are table mountains or mesas with a long formation history. : )
An incredible long time ago there was a basin in wich layers of sediment coming from the Rocky Mountains accumulated and consolidated. About 70 mil years ago tectonic activity lifted the whole area and the former basin became the Colorado Pleteau. Weathering and erosion set in to carve out the different layers of rocks, leaving the more resistant rocks higher than their surroundings.

Jeder kennt sie, die roten Felsen im Monument Valley, sei es aus etlichen Westernfilmen oder der Malboro-Werbung. Sie sehen ein bisschen aus als wären sie einfach vom Himmel gefallen. Die Geographin weiß aber, daß es sich um Tafelberge handelt, die eine lange Entstehungsgeschichte haben. : )
Vor unglaublich langer Zeit war die Gegend ein Tieflandbecken, in dem sich Schicht um Schicht Sedimente aus den frühen Rocky Mountains ablagerten und zu Gestein verfestigten. Vor etwa 70 Mio. Jahren hob sich die Erdoberfläche und aus dem Becken wurde das etwa 2100 m hohe Coloradoplateau aus Kalk- und Sandstein. Verwitterung und Erosion begannen die einzelnen Schichten abzutragen und dort wo das Gestein resistenter war blieben die ca. 300 m hohen Tafelberge zurück.
